Synopsis:

Her change of jobs takes her closer to her dream of doing something useful and to become God's thumb to squish Hitler flat, and before she can say "Heil-You-Know-Who", she's put in the midst of war-torn Berlin with two missions: one to serve her country, and the other to find out what happened to Paul - her lover, her boss, the only man she could love. The story shows Maggie playing the role of a Baroness fallen into bad times, of a spy who is not afraid of spiders, of a woman whose golden heart will put her in danger if she's not careful, of a woman in love who went to the very bowels of Hitler's Berlin to find out what happened to Paul.

History and fiction are mixed in this story that will keep you turning pages until you reach its end.

2009-07-13 Guest .... This is one of those stories that hook the reader from the first page. The characters are very well defined, and the story itself follows history to a T. The author added her fiction to a factual time in history and she did it softly and with humor.

The descriptions of Berlin during those gray days of the war are excellent; the two pages dedicated to Pearl Harbor are so well written that one feels like crying over something nobody could do anything about while it happened - but we all know it did happen!; and her dialogue is outstanding.
I recommend it very highly.

2009-07-13 Guest .... Christina Brett writes with passion and detail. Having lived through the Blitz in London as a child, I could easily identify with the characters and the background.
It isn't easy to mix humor with the grim realities of war, but that is how we Brits got through that terrible time, and Ms. Brett manages to convey that desperate kind of levity. Well done.

2009-07-13 Guest .... I THOROUGHLY enjoyed your book. I did not know what to expect at first and I felt myself captivated from the beginning. I read it that first night and kept picking it up over the past couple of days to get back to how things were going in Berlin. Witty, fun, lovely, scary, and true to life.

I enjoyed getting to know the characters and if all of Christina's books are this intriguing, I have found a new favorite author!

Thank you!

2009-07-13 Guest .... Like a time machine Ms. Brett takes us back to the desperate days of WWII when the fredom of the world was threatened by the evilness of the Axis Powers. The romance that occurs in the story is tender and uplifting. A good read that warms the soul.

2009-07-13 Guest .... This book will keep you turning the pages until you are done. You won't be able to put it down. So much mystery packed into these pages, you won't know what's going to happen until the very end. In a time of war, Brett brings you the facts and some funny happenings at the same time. If you haven't read it, you are missing out on a lot of good reading. Read this one first then read all the other books Brett has published to see what an amazing author she really is.

2009-07-13 Guest ....

2009-07-13 Guest .... Loved this story! Christina Brett has the imagination of Jules Verne, the wit of Oscar Wilde, writes dialogue like Robert B. Parker, and creates unforgettable characters like Jane Austen.

My father lent me this book and told me I was in for a treat, and indeed I was! It is excellent and I look forward to reading more by her, in fact, I went into Amazon and found the others and ordered them. I have the feeling I am not going to be disappointed.

Good story. Good characters. Good reading all over!!

2009-07-13 Guest .... This book is very well written and very accurate. I was two years of age during the Blitz, and although I don't remember any of it, my parents did and they always talked about those terrible days. Mum used to say that whenever they heard the sirens she used to take me and my brother to the bottom floor of the house and she'd throw herself on top of us to protect us. Nothing ever happened to us or to our house, but many people known to our family died. It's difficult for the English to forget days like those!
Ms. Brett's narrative is so interesting that one follows it page after page always waiting to see what happenes in the next chapter. There is a part ... I'm looking at the page to be accurate ... bottom of page 203 and beginning of 204, in which Liz passionately speaks about what Hitler did to England and those small paragraphs brought tears to my eyes because I know them to be true. It's amazing how the writer "hits" it so accurately so many times during the story! I truly recommend this story to every one who wants to spend a very entertaining time engrossed in a wonderful book!

2009-07-13 Guest ....

2009-07-13 Guest .... The words in my summary say it all. I bought the book a Saturday morning and I had finished it by Sunday evening.

Very detailed, very good dialogue, and most of all, Brett's historical facts blend very well with her fiction. Someone else in these reviews praised the two pages covering Pearl Harbor and I must agree with that person: Brett says that "it was like seeing the country fall into the ocean one state at a time" as our ships were sank by Japanese bombers during that awful morning of 1941. My father was there and he still remembers it well; I read those pages to him and he had tears in his eyes when I finished.

Where have you been all my life, Christina Brett?
